Can you have two Upwork accounts? The short answer
No. Upwork allows one main account per person, and its help center is blunt about it: think of it as one Upwork account for life. A second account with a separate login is a violation of the Terms of Service whether you use it or not, whether the first one is open or closed, and whether you created it on purpose or forgot the old one existed. The penalty runs from a verification hold to permanent closure of every account tied to you. The rule has no grace period and no reset button.
What trips people up is that one account and one profile are not the same thing. Inside a single Upwork login you can hold a freelancer profile, an agency profile, and several client profiles at once, and switch between them from the menu under your profile photo. Nearly every question I get in Upwork Income Club that starts with 'can I open a second account for' has an answer that lives inside the account the member already has. The rest of this post walks through what the one account permits, why the usual reasons for wanting a second one fail, the exceptions Upwork will actually grant, and the clean-up steps if you have already crossed the line.
One Login, Three Hats: what one Upwork account actually lets you do
Inside the club we teach this as One Login, Three Hats. The login is you: one email, one password, one identity that Upwork has verified. The hats are the roles you can wear from that login. Upwork's help center lists exactly what is permitted under a single account: one freelancer profile, one agency profile, and multiple client profiles. Each hat keeps its own contracts, its own financials, and its own activity history, so the separation people want from a second account already exists. It is just behind a dropdown instead of a second password.
One Login, Three Hats: the profiles Upwork permits under a single account
| Hat | How many | What it is for | What stays separate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer profile | One | Selling your own work. Proposals, contracts, reviews, Job Success Score. | Your personal earnings, contracts, and feedback history. |
| Agency profile | One | Selling work delivered by a team you run. Has its own reviews and its own Job Success Score, both starting at zero. | Agency contracts, agency earnings, agency reputation. Your freelancer profile stays intact alongside it. |
| Client profile | Multiple | Hiring freelancers. One company profile per business you hire for, such as a day job and a personal venture. | Each company has its own payment methods, reports, jobs, and work history. Companies cannot be merged later. |
Two practical notes on the table. First, adding a client profile does not touch your freelancer profile; the two coexist under one login with separate histories. Second, an agency is a genuinely separate reputation, which is why I only recommend opening one when other people are delivering alongside you. The trade-offs are in [Upwork agency account vs freelancer account](/blog/upwork-agency-account-vs-freelancer-account). If you are a solo freelancer who wants to look bigger, an agency profile with zero reviews will cost you more bids than it wins.
Why freelancers want a second Upwork account, and why each reason fails
Every request for a second account I have seen comes from one of six situations. Upwork has a written answer for each, and in every case the answer is a route inside the existing account. Here they are in the order I hear them.
- 'My Job Success Score dropped and I want a fresh start.' This is the one Upwork built the rule to stop. Its help center lists avoiding or hiding poor feedback as a reason multiple accounts are banned. A new account to escape a bad score is the fastest way to lose both. The real recovery path is in [how to improve your Upwork Job Success Score](/blog/how-to-improve-upwork-job-success-score) and [how to handle a bad review on Upwork](/blog/how-to-handle-a-bad-review-on-upwork).
- 'I forgot my login.' Upwork says creating a new account because you cannot remember your credentials is always a violation. Recover the password or security answer on the original account instead.
- 'I closed my old account, so I can start a new one now.' No. Closing an account does not free you to register again, even with the same email. Upwork's instruction is to reopen the closed account, and there is a reactivation flow for exactly that, covered below.
- 'I had an account years ago and never used it.' It is still your account. Upwork states an old account remains accessible and is the one you are required to use. Log in, update it, and build from there.
- 'I work in two unrelated niches and want two profiles.' Not with two accounts. Upwork removed specialized profiles, so the answer today is one strong generalist-friendly title and overview, plus positioning the second niche through your portfolio and Project Catalog. How that works now is in [Upwork removed specialized profiles](/blog/upwork-specialized-profiles-removed).
- 'I want to hire and freelance.' That is a client profile added to your existing account, not a second account. Upwork explicitly permits freelancer and client profiles in the same login.
One situation that is not a violation: two people each holding their own account. Upwork's rule is one account per person, and it says each person at a company needs their own login. What you cannot do is share one account between two people, or let anyone log in and work or communicate as you. Upwork treats sharing, selling, or transferring an account as a violation and says it reports possible crimes to law enforcement. Two logins for two people is normal; two people on one login is the problem.
The exceptions Upwork will actually approve
There is a narrow list of reasons Upwork says it may allow a person to hold more than one account, and every item on it has the same condition: you contact Customer Support first and include documentation. Creating the second account yourself and explaining later is still a violation even when the reason would have qualified.
- You hire on behalf of your employer or another company, and that company requires you to use its corporate email domain and its own hiring permissions.
- You pay taxes as a freelancer in more than one country.
- A client or agency you work with requires you to use an account registered under their corporate email domain.
Notice what is not on the list: a second niche, a fresh start, a lost password, a different payment method, or a partner who wants to use your reviews. If your situation matches one of the three, open a support ticket before you do anything else, attach the documents that prove it, and wait for the written approval. Keep that ticket. If the second account is ever questioned, the approval is your entire defence.
What to do if you already have two Upwork accounts
This happens more often than people admit, usually because someone registered years ago, forgot, and signed up again with a different email. Upwork's own guidance for an accidental duplicate is simple: do not use both, close one, and contact support if you are unsure how. The order matters, so here is how I walk members through it.
- Stop working from the newer account immediately. Do not send proposals, accept offers, or message clients from it while you sort this out. Activity on both accounts at the same time is what turns an accident into a suspension.
- Decide which account to keep. Usually it is the one with earnings, reviews, and a Job Success Score. If the older account is empty and the newer one has your history, keeping the newer one is fine; the rule is one account, not the first account.
- Clean out the one you are closing. Upwork requires you to end all contracts, withdraw all proposals, and receive and withdraw all payments before it will let you close a freelancer account. Closing a contract cleanly is covered in [how to end an Upwork contract professionally](/blog/how-to-end-an-upwork-contract-professionally).
- Close it from Account settings > Contact info > Close my account on desktop, or Settings > Account management and control > Close account in the app. You will be asked for your security question; if you never set one, Upwork makes you set it before the close button appears.
- If anything is in the way, open a support ticket and say plainly that you created a duplicate by mistake and want to consolidate to one account. Upwork's help center invites exactly this. Volunteering it reads very differently from being caught.
How to get back into an old Upwork account instead of starting over
Since a new account is never the answer, the practical skill is reactivating the one you have. If the account is merely dormant, log in with the old email and password and carry on; nothing needs reactivating. If you closed it, Upwork's reactivation flow is short: log in with the former credentials, including Google or Apple sign-in if that is how it was connected, select the link in the 'account is closed' message, open the email Upwork sends, and follow it back to the site. The link expires four hours after you request it, so do this in one sitting. You may be asked your security question at the end.
Upwork lists three cases where self-service reactivation will not work and you need to contact support instead: the account was set up as both freelancer and client, the account has been inactive for more than five years, or the account was permanently suspended for a Terms of Service violation. In that last case there is no path back at all; Upwork states you will not be allowed to work on the platform again and that new accounts will be closed. If you have lost access to the old email address, that is also a support ticket, not a new registration.
Expect a verification request if the details on a reactivated account no longer match you. Upwork says that if the information you provided is not accurate it may ask you to re-verify your account, and can restrict the account until you do. That process, and the documents that satisfy it, are in [how to get your Upwork profile approved](/blog/how-to-get-your-upwork-profile-approved). A hold at this stage is a documentation gap, not a conduct violation; answer it through the official channel.
What happens if Upwork finds a second account
Upwork does not publish how it detects duplicate accounts, and I am not going to guess at the signals. What it does publish is the consequence. Having multiple accounts goes against the Terms of Service and may lead to permanent account closure, and if Upwork cannot verify the information you provided it may restrict or permanently suspend the account. In practice the notice arrives as a suspension with a verification request or a stated violation. How to read that notice, and how to respond to it, is in [Upwork account suspended, what to do](/blog/upwork-account-suspended-what-to-do).
The part you control is what you do next. The response I coach is three moves: stop using the second account the same day, tell support exactly which account you want to keep and why, and do not open a third one while you wait. The worst move is registering yet another account during the review. Upwork treats a new account created during an active suspension as its own multiple-accounts violation, and its position on permanently suspended users is that new accounts will be closed, so at that point the original is very hard to get back.
If you are staring at two logins right now and are not sure which to keep, or you have an old account you cannot get into and a proposal you want to send today, bring it to Upwork Income Club before you touch anything. Members post the situation, we work out which account to keep and the exact wording for the support ticket, and nothing gets sent until it is right. It is $9/month at upworkincomeclub.com, and one account kept out of a permanent closure is worth a great deal more than that.

Frequently asked questions
Can you have two Upwork accounts?
No. Upwork allows one main account per person, with one login and one email. Having more than one account is a violation of the Terms of Service and can lead to suspension or permanent closure. Under that single account you can hold one freelancer profile, one agency profile, and multiple client profiles, which covers most reasons people want a second account.
Can I be both a client and a freelancer on Upwork?
Yes, from the same account. Upwork explicitly permits a freelancer profile and a client profile under one login, and you switch between them from the dropdown under your profile photo. Do not create a separate account to hire; add a client profile to the account you already have.
Can I delete my Upwork account and make a new one?
No. Upwork states that opening a new account after closing your old one, even with the same email, is also a Terms of Service violation. Its instruction is to reopen the closed account instead. There is a self-service reactivation flow for closed freelancer accounts, and support can help when that flow does not apply.
What if I forgot my Upwork login? Can I make a new account?
No. Upwork says creating a second account because you cannot remember your login information is always against the Terms of Service. Recover the password or security answer on the original account, or contact support if you no longer have access to the email address on file.
Are there any exceptions where Upwork allows two accounts?
A few, and only with prior approval from Customer Support and supporting documentation. Upwork lists hiring on behalf of an employer that requires its corporate email domain and hiring permissions, paying taxes as a freelancer in more than one country, and a client or agency that requires you to use an account on their corporate domain. Ask first; creating the account yourself and explaining later is still a violation.
I accidentally have two Upwork accounts. What should I do?
Stop using one immediately and close it. Upwork's guidance for an accidental duplicate is not to use both and to close one of them, and it invites you to contact support for help. Before a freelancer account can be closed you must end all contracts, withdraw all proposals, and withdraw all payments. Keep the account that holds your earnings and reviews.
