How to add certifications on Upwork (the short answer)
Upwork lets you add certifications you earned outside the platform to your freelancer profile, and it has a separate track for certifications from its trusted partners. The manual route takes a couple of minutes from the Certifications section of your profile. The partner route is worth knowing about because it comes with a visible badge and free Connects, which a manually added certificate does not.
Everything factual in this post comes from Upwork's own help center articles on adding a certification, the Partner Certified Talent program, Upwork Skill Certifications, enhancing your profile and the 100% complete profile, checked on the day this was written. Upwork changes these pages often, so if the editor shows something different, trust the editor.
How to manually add a certification to your Upwork profile
- Go to your freelancer profile.
- Scroll down to the Certifications section.
- Select Add certification.
- Select Add manually.
- Enter the certification name, provider, issue date, expiration date and description. Certification ID and certification URL are optional.
- Select Add certification. It then appears on your profile.
Use the description field for the client, not the issuer. One or two sentences on what the certification proves you can do for them beats pasting the course syllabus.
Partner Certified on Upwork: what it is and how to claim it
The Partner Certified Talent program brings certifications from Upwork's trusted partner companies onto the platform. These are issued and validated by the partner, not self-reported, so Upwork treats them as a stronger signal than a manual entry. Any freelancer with an Upwork account can take part.
Manual certification vs Partner Certified, from Upwork's help center (checked 2026-10-19)
| Added manually | Partner Certified | |
|---|---|---|
| Who validates it | Self-reported by you | Issued and validated by an Upwork partner |
| Where it shows | Certifications section of your profile | Certifications section, plus a Partner Certified badge on your profile and proposals |
| Skill tag | No special marking | You can add the related skill, marked as Partner Certified |
| Connects | None | 150 free Connects each time you claim a certification from a new partner |
| How to add | Add certification, then Add manually | Claim it from the Certifications section, or start one from there or the Partner Certified page |
There are two ways in. If you already finished a partner certification, claim it from the Certifications section of your profile and the badge appears. If you have not, the Certifications section or the Partner Certified page shows what is available and sends you to the partner's site to complete it. Once you finish, the credential is sent to Upwork and you are notified to claim it.
The Connects alone make this worth a look if you are new and bidding a lot. For the other ways to top up without paying, see [how to get free Upwork Connects](/blog/how-to-get-free-upwork-connects).
What happened to Upwork Skill Certifications?
Upwork used to run its own invitation-only Upwork Skill Certifications in web, mobile and software development and in customer service. Upwork's help center now calls them legacy credentials and says they are no longer issued. Ones already earned stay valid and visible on profiles.
So if you read older advice telling you to go take an Upwork Skill Certification in your niche, that path is closed. The current equivalent is a partner certification or a credible outside certification added manually.
Do certifications help your Upwork profile?
Two measurable ways, from Upwork's own pages, and one judgment call from me.
- Profile completeness. Each certification is worth 5% toward a complete profile, capped at 10%. Certifications sit in the optional half, alongside portfolio items, extra employment history, education and a profile video. Upwork requires a 100% complete profile to be eligible for Rising Talent and Top Rated.
- Partner badge visibility. Partner Certified badges show on your profile and on your proposals, which is where clients are deciding.
- My opinion: a certification will not win a job on its own. A client hiring for a specific outcome cares more about a portfolio piece that shows that outcome. Certifications are best as a tiebreaker and a trust signal when you have no reviews yet.
If you are still at zero reviews, stack the signals that do not need client history: [a portfolio built the right way](/blog/how-to-add-portfolio-on-upwork), [the right profile skills](/blog/upwork-profile-skills), and the playbook in [how to land your first Upwork client with zero reviews](/blog/how-to-land-first-upwork-client-zero-reviews). For the badge side, see [how to get the Rising Talent badge](/blog/upwork-rising-talent-badge-how-to-get-it).
Which certifications I would actually add
- Add certifications that map to the jobs you bid on. A cloud certification on a profile selling cloud migrations earns its spot. An unrelated course certificate is noise.
- Prefer certifications a client can verify. If it has a credential ID or public link, include it.
- Take a partner certification if one exists in your niche. You get the badge, the skill marking and the Connects for the same effort.
- Keep expiration dates honest and remove lapsed certifications or renew them. An expired date on your profile reads worse than no entry.
- Hit the 10% completeness cap with your two strongest, then stop. Beyond that, extra certifications add clutter, not completeness.
- Mention the most relevant one in your overview or proposal only when it answers something the client asked for. Your [overview section](/blog/upwork-profile-overview-section-guide) should still lead with the client's problem.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add certifications on Upwork?
Go to your freelancer profile, scroll to the Certifications section, select Add certification, then Add manually. Enter the certification name, provider, issue date, expiration date and description, optionally the certification ID and URL, then select Add certification.
What is Partner Certified on Upwork?
It is Upwork's program for certifications from trusted partner companies. The certification is issued and validated by the partner, and once claimed it adds a Partner Certified badge to your profile and proposals.
Do you get free Connects for certifications on Upwork?
For partner certifications, yes. Upwork gives 150 free Connects each time you claim a certification from a new partner. Manually added certifications do not earn Connects.
Why is my partner certification not showing up on Upwork?
The email address on your account with the partner must match the email on your Upwork account. If they do not match, Upwork will not detect the certification automatically.
Does Upwork still offer Upwork Skill Certifications?
No. Upwork describes Upwork Skill Certifications as legacy credentials that are no longer issued. Ones already earned remain valid and visible on profiles.
How much do certifications count toward a 100% complete Upwork profile?
Each certification is worth 5% toward profile completeness, up to a maximum of 10%. They are optional items, not one of the four required ones.
Can I add a professional license as a certification on Upwork?
Upwork handles professional licenses through a separate process from certifications, so add licenses in the licenses flow rather than as a certification.
