How to add a portfolio on Upwork (the short answer)
Your Upwork portfolio is a section of your freelancer profile where each item is a project page: a title, your role, a short description, the skills it shows, and the actual work as images, video, audio, documents or links. Clients see published items on your profile, and you can attach them to proposals. Adding one takes a few minutes. Choosing what to put in it is the part that actually wins work.
Everything factual in this post comes from Upwork's own help center articles on enhancing your profile, portfolio publishing, portfolio limits, drafts, sharing and the Specialized Profiles change, checked on the day this was written. Upwork edits these pages often, so if you are reading this months later, recheck the limits in the editor itself.
Step by step: adding a portfolio project
- Go to your profile and find the Portfolio section.
- Click the (+) button to start a new project.
- Fill in the title, your role on the project, and the project description.
- Add up to five skill tags under Skills & deliverables, so clients can see which skills the project demonstrates.
- Optional: link a related Upwork job if the work came from a past Upwork contract.
- Add the content itself: images, video, audio, documents or links to external sites.
- Preview the project to check it looks the way you intended.
- Click Publish to make it visible to clients, or Save as draft to finish it later.
To change a published item later, click the pencil icon on it. If that item is linked to an Upwork contract, Upwork notifies the client about the edit and they get three days to accept or reject the link before it is published again.
Upwork portfolio limits: fields, file types and sizes
Most portfolio upload problems come from hitting a limit you did not know about. These are the numbers Upwork's help center gives:
Upwork portfolio limits as stated in Upwork's help center (checked 2026-10-17)
| Item | Limit |
|---|---|
| Project title | Up to 70 characters |
| Your role | Up to 100 characters |
| Project description | Up to 600 characters |
| Skill tags per project | Up to five |
| Images | .jpg, .jpeg, .gif or .png. Recommended 1000 x 750px, minimum 400 x 300px, maximum 4000 x 4000px |
| Videos from your computer | Up to 100MB each, up to two video uploads per project |
| YouTube or Vimeo videos | Paste the link. For YouTube, the video must be public and monetization disabled |
| Documents | .pdf only, up to 25MB |
| Audio | .mp3 only, up to 10MB |
| Portfolio projects in total | Up to 1,000 |
The 600-character description is the one that bites. That is roughly a short paragraph, so you cannot tell the whole story there. Use it for three things: what the client needed, what you did, and the outcome in the client's terms. Let the images or files carry the rest.
Why your Upwork portfolio item will not publish
- You linked a past Upwork job. The client has to approve the link, or three days have to pass without them approving or rejecting it. Upwork emails you when the item goes live.
- A required field is empty. Check the title, role, description and skills before you hit Publish again.
- A file is outside the accepted types or sizes in the table above, for example a .mov over 100MB or a Word document instead of a PDF.
- A web link will not add. Upwork says some hosting domains are not supported for portfolio links, including certain .app domains. Use a .com or .net version if you have one, or upload screenshots instead.
Should you link past Upwork jobs to portfolio items?
Yes, when you can. A portfolio item tied to a real Upwork contract carries more weight than a standalone image because the client can see it was paid work done on the platform. Upwork notifies the past client when you link their job, so they can review it and raise concerns about it being shared.
Two things to know. Only end-of-contract feedback shows on linked portfolio items. Mid-contract feedback appears in your public work history but not on the item. And if the work is under an NDA or the client is private about it, ask before linking. A short message asking permission costs nothing and protects the relationship, which matters more than one portfolio tile. If you are still waiting on that first review, [how to get 5-star Upwork reviews](/blog/how-to-get-5-star-upwork-reviews-that-win-more-jobs) covers how to ask for feedback well.
What to put in your Upwork portfolio
Upwork's own best practices are short: be selective and show your best work rather than everything, highlight the skills and technologies used, keep it updated by removing outdated or irrelevant pieces, and never include contact details. That last one is a rule, not a tip. Like the rest of your profile, portfolio files and linked sites cannot contain your email, phone number or other contact information.
My take: build the portfolio backwards from the jobs you want, not forwards from everything you have done. Here is the order I would work in:
- Pick the one service you most want to be hired for. If you have not decided, start with [how to pick a freelance niche on Upwork](/blog/how-to-pick-a-freelance-niche-on-upwork).
- Open a handful of job posts for that service and note the deliverable clients describe: a landing page, a cleaned dataset, a 60-second ad edit.
- Make your first few portfolio items show exactly that deliverable, so a client recognizes their own job in your work at a glance.
- Write each title as the outcome or deliverable, not a vague label. "Shopify product page redesign" tells a client more than "Project 3".
- Tag each item with the skills it genuinely demonstrates, using the same wording as your profile skills.
- Remove pieces that pull in a direction you no longer want to be hired for.
No client work yet? Upwork says new freelancers can add personal or sample projects to show experience in the work they want to do. Label them honestly as samples. [How to build a freelance portfolio with no client work](/blog/how-to-build-a-freelance-portfolio-with-no-client-work) goes deep on making spec pieces that read as credible.
How your portfolio shows up now that Specialized Profiles are gone
Upwork removed Specialized Profiles as of May 28, 2026. Portfolio items from those old profiles were moved into your main profile automatically, unlike titles, overviews and skills, which were not. Upwork now says that when you send a proposal, the work history, reviews, portfolio items and skills that best match the job post are highlighted and appear first.
That makes good tagging and clear titles more important, not less. Upwork is deciding which items to surface for each client, and it can only match what you have described well. It also means one profile can hold portfolio pieces for two related services without you hiding either. Details are in [Upwork Specialized Profiles removed](/blog/upwork-specialized-profiles-removed), and the skills side of the same change is in [Upwork profile skills](/blog/upwork-profile-skills).
Use your portfolio in proposals, not just on your profile
Most clients judge you from the proposal before they ever open your full profile. When you submit a proposal, the Profile highlights section lets you attach items from your profile, including past Upwork jobs, portfolio projects and certificates. Upwork notes this feature is not available to agencies. You can also share any published project with the Share link in its upper corner.
Attach the one or two items closest to the job, and mention them in your opening lines so the client knows why they are there. That pairs with the advice in [Upwork proposal that gets replies](/blog/upwork-proposal-that-gets-replies). A portfolio that matches the job is also one of the strongest levers covered in [how to land your first Upwork client with zero reviews](/blog/how-to-land-first-upwork-client-zero-reviews), because it is proof you can show before any review exists.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add a portfolio on Upwork?
Go to your profile, click the (+) button in the Portfolio section, fill in the title, role, description and up to five skill tags, optionally link a related Upwork job, add your images, video, audio, documents or links, preview it, then click Publish.
How many portfolio items can I have on Upwork?
Upwork's help center says you can include up to 1,000 portfolio projects. Its best practices still recommend being selective and showing your best work rather than everything.
What file types can I upload to my Upwork portfolio?
Images in .jpg, .jpeg, .gif or .png, videos from your computer up to 100MB (two per project), YouTube or Vimeo links, PDF documents up to 25MB, and .mp3 audio up to 10MB, plus links to external sites.
Why won't my Upwork portfolio item publish?
If you linked a past Upwork job, the client must approve it or three days must pass first. Otherwise check that every required field is filled in, that your files are within the accepted types and sizes, and that your web link is on a supported domain.
Can clients see my draft portfolio projects?
No. Drafts are not published, so they are not visible on your profile. You find them in the Drafts tab of your Portfolio section.
Can I add sample projects to my Upwork portfolio if I have no clients yet?
Yes. Upwork says freelancers still building their presence can add personal or sample projects to show experience in the work they want to do. Label them honestly as samples.
Can I put my email or website contact details in my Upwork portfolio?
No. Upwork does not allow contact information in your portfolio, including inside uploaded files and linked sites. That means no email address, phone number or other contact details.
