What is an Upwork Boosted Profile?
An Upwork Boosted Profile is a paid placement for your whole profile. You bid Connects to show up in a promoted spot when clients search for freelancers in your work category, and in recommendations on job posts that match your skills. Clients see a Boosted label next to your name. Upwork itself compares it to other pay-per-click ads: you set a maximum bid per click, and you are charged only when a client engages.
It is not the same as boosting a proposal. A boosted proposal applies to one specific job post. A Boosted Profile works across client search results and job post recommendations, so you can be seen by clients you never sent a proposal to.
Every fact below comes from Upwork's own help center articles on Boosted Profiles, Connects and profile completeness, checked on the day this was written. Upwork tests and changes this feature often, so if the setup screen shows something different, trust the screen.
How Boosted Profiles work
- You choose the audience: a work category and a specialty.
- You set the maximum number of Connects you will pay per click, plus a spending limit.
- When a client views a relevant search page, Upwork's ad server runs an auction based on bid price and relevance. The higher your bid, the more likely you are to be shown.
- If you win, your profile appears in the promoted section with a Boosted label.
- You are charged Connects only if the client engages with the boosted placement.
- You track results in My Stats.
Relevance matters as well as the bid. That is my reason for treating the boost as an amplifier, not a fix: a strong bid on a profile that does not match the category you picked is buying placement Upwork may not even give you.
What you get charged for (it is more than clicks)
Several of Upwork's shorter help articles say you pay only when a client clicks. The full how-to article lists more than clicks. Plan your budget around the longer list.
Boosted Profile charge rules, from Upwork's help center (checked 2026-10-20)
| Client action | Charged? |
|---|---|
| Clicks your profile in a Boosted Profile spot | Yes |
| Selects the heart button to save your Boosted Profile | Yes |
| Selects Invite to job from your Boosted Profile | Yes |
| Selects Hire from your Boosted Profile | Yes |
| Views your Boosted Profile video | Yes |
| Same client clicks several times on one job post | Charged once per job post |
| Same client clicks several times outside a job post | Charged once every 30 days |
| Your profile is shown but nobody engages | No |
How to boost your profile on Upwork, step by step
- Go to Find work and select the pencil icon next to Boost your profile.
- Choose the work category and specialty you want to target.
- If you are eligible, choose whether to add a video. Record a new one or upload one you already have.
- Enter the number of Connects you want to pay per click.
- Set the spending limit and use the toggle to make it per day or in total.
- Optionally set an end date.
- Select Boost now.
One small inconsistency: one Upwork article says you can start a boost from your profile or the Find work page, while the main how-to only describes Find work. Find work is the path both articles agree on.
To change it later, go back to the same pencil icon. Edit changes bids, limits and the end date. Pause puts the boost on hold and keeps your settings. Turn off stops it and resets the settings, so use Pause if you plan to come back.
Daily limit vs total limit vs end date
Boosted Profile spending controls, from Upwork's help center
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Daily limit | Boost turns off when that day's spend hits the limit, then turns on again the next day |
| Total limit | Boost turns off when total spend hits the limit, if that happens before your end date |
| End date (optional) | Boost ends automatically on that date |
| Pause | Puts the boost on hold and keeps your settings |
| Turn off | Stops the boost and resets your settings |
My default for a first test is a total limit plus an end date. A daily limit with no end date keeps spending every day until you remember to stop it. A total cap means the worst case is a number you chose up front. Connects cost $0.15 each according to Upwork, so convert your cap to dollars before you hit Boost now: a 100-Connect cap is $15.
Who can use Boosted Profiles
- Your profile visibility must be public. A private profile cannot use the feature. If yours is private, see [why your Upwork profile is private and how to fix it](/blog/why-is-my-upwork-profile-private).
- Your profile must have all the required items, which Upwork defines as at least 50% complete: a profile overview, a profile photo, at least one employment history item and at least one skill tag.
- Upwork says a complete profile matters for winning jobs even though only the required items are needed to boost. That matches how I see it: the boost buys the view, the profile has to win it.
Adding a video to your Boosted Profile
Upwork says the Boosted Profile video is still being tested and is not available to everyone. To be eligible you need to meet at least one of these:
- A Top Rated, Top Rated Plus or Expert-Vetted badge
- Purchased at least 30 Connects in the past 90 days
- Spent at least 30 Connects, free or paid, in the past 90 days
- $1K+ in lifetime earnings
- An active Freelancer Plus membership
- A verified identity
The video must be up to 60 seconds and up to 100 MB, in mp4 or mov, really you and not AI-generated, in English unless you offer non-English work, and free of background music, copyrighted material and references to other companies. A boost with a video does not start until the video is approved, which Upwork says typically takes within 30 minutes. Inactive videos are kept for up to six months after you stop boosting, then deleted.
Remember that a client viewing the video is a chargeable action. For the free YouTube video that sits on your profile, see [the Upwork video introduction guide](/blog/upwork-video-introduction). One 60-second recording can serve both.
Is an Upwork Boosted Profile worth it?
Upwork does not publish average click prices or results data for Boosted Profiles, and I am not going to invent any. What follows is my reasoning, not a measured result.
- Fix conversion before you buy traffic. If clients who already find your profile do not invite or message you, a boost just pays to show the same profile to more people. Start with your [profile title](/blog/upwork-profile-title-that-ranks) and [overview](/blog/upwork-profile-overview-section-guide).
- Boost the one category you win in. Pick the category and specialty that match your best portfolio pieces and reviews. Relevance is part of the auction, and a narrow match is cheaper to prove.
- Run a capped, dated test. Total limit, end date, and a note of your invites and profile views in My Stats before and after. If invites do not move, stop.
- Protect your proposal budget. Boost spend and proposal spend share one balance. If you are still bidding heavily, decide your proposal Connects first. [How many Connects it takes to win a job](/blog/how-many-connects-to-win-a-job-on-upwork) helps size that.
- Compare it to the other paid options. A boosted proposal targets a job you already chose. The [Availability Badge](/blog/upwork-availability-badge) signals you can start now. A Boosted Profile reaches clients who never saw a proposal from you. Pick the one that fixes your actual bottleneck, and see [are boosted proposals worth it](/blog/are-boosted-proposals-worth-it-on-upwork) for the proposal side.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Boosted Profile on Upwork?
It is a paid placement where you bid Connects to appear in promoted spots when clients search for freelancers in your work category or view matching job posts. A Boosted label shows next to your name, and you pay only when a client engages.
How much does a Boosted Profile cost on Upwork?
You set your own maximum Connects per click and a daily or total limit. Upwork runs an auction, so the winning price varies. Connects cost $0.15 each, which lets you convert any bid or cap into dollars.
When am I charged for a Boosted Profile?
When a client clicks your profile in a boosted spot, saves it with the heart button, selects Invite to job or Hire from it, or views your Boosted Profile video. Repeat clicks from one client are charged once per job post, or once every 30 days outside a job post.
How do I boost my profile on Upwork?
Go to Find work, select the pencil icon next to Boost your profile, choose a work category and specialty, optionally add a video if eligible, enter your Connects per click, set a daily or total limit, optionally set an end date, then select Boost now.
Who can use Boosted Profiles on Upwork?
Freelancers with a public profile that has the required items completed: a profile overview, a profile photo, at least one employment history item and at least one skill tag.
What is the difference between a boosted profile and a boosted proposal?
A boosted proposal applies to one specific job post. A Boosted Profile promotes your whole profile across client search results and matching job posts, so clients can find you without a proposal.
What happens if I run out of Connects while boosting?
Upwork disables the boost if your balance cannot cover a charge, and any Connects owed are deducted when you turn the service off or restart it.
How do I stop or pause a Boosted Profile?
Go to Find work and select the pencil icon next to Boost your profile. Pause keeps your settings, Turn off stops the boost and resets them, and Edit changes bids, limits and the end date.
