Upwork contract paused: what it means

When an Upwork contract is paused, it is temporarily inactive. On an hourly contract you cannot log more time, and Upwork's guidance to freelancers is blunt: stop working on the contract immediately. Any work you complete while the contract is paused is not covered by Upwork's payment protection. Hours you billed before the pause are still eligible for protection, so nothing you already logged is lost just because the status changed.

A pause is not the same as an ended contract. Restarting simply unpauses it, so your history on the contract stays where it was. Everything below comes from Upwork's own help center articles on paused contracts, putting an hourly contract on hold, contract statuses and weekly payments, checked on the day this was written. Upwork updates these pages often, so recheck the help center if you are reading this much later.

Who paused it: the client or Upwork

There are two very different kinds of pause, and what you do next depends on which one you are looking at.

Client pause vs Upwork pause, per Upwork's help center

QuestionClient paused itUpwork paused it
WhyThe client wants to put work on hold, for any reason. To protect both sides, most commonly a problem with the client's account or billing method, such as an expired or declined card.
Will you be told why?Usually the client messages you. Upwork recommends they explain why and when they plan to restart.No. Upwork says it cannot share the specific reason because of privacy.
NotificationDepends on the client's message.Upwork's freelancer article says no email is sent when Upwork pauses or reactivates a contract. Check the status under All contracts.
Who can restart itThe client, from the same options menu, with Restart.Upwork, once the underlying issue is fixed. For a billing problem, that means the client clearing the past-due balance.

If you got no message and the contract just shows as paused, assume it could be either until the client tells you otherwise. Do not guess that it is a billing glitch and keep working.

What to do when your Upwork contract is paused

  1. Stop working. Close the time tracker and do not start new deliverables on that contract.
  2. Write down where the work stands: what is done, what is half done, and what is next. You will need this when it restarts.
  3. Message the client on Upwork. You can still message a client while a contract is paused. Ask one simple question: when do you expect to restart?
  4. Wait for the contract to show as active again before you resume. Upwork's advice is to not restart work until you know the contract has been reactivated, even if the client says it is fine.
  5. Use the gap. Move the hours to another contract or to proposals instead of waiting on this one.

A message I would send: "Hi, I see the contract is paused on my side. No problem at all. I have stopped work and noted where things stand. Do you have a rough date for when you want to pick it back up, so I can plan my schedule?" No pressure, no guilt, and it gets you the one thing you need, which is a date.

How the client pauses and restarts an hourly contract

If a client asks how to pause your contract (for example, they are going on holiday and do not want surprise hours), send them the exact steps from Upwork's client-side article:

  1. Go to Manage work, then Your contracts, and find the contract.
  2. Open the (...) options menu and choose Pause contract.
  3. To restart later, open the same (...) menu and choose Restart.

The pause option Upwork documents here is for hourly contracts. The point is to stop you from logging more hours until the client is ready. Upwork also notes that Upwork Payroll contracts always show as paused, because they use a separate billing system, so if you are on Payroll that status is normal and not a warning sign.

What a pause does to your money

  • Hourly time billed before the pause: still eligible for payment protection, per Upwork. Keep your work diary clean so it qualifies, as covered in [the Upwork work diary and Hourly Protection rules](/blog/upwork-work-diary-and-hourly-protection).
  • Work done during the pause: not covered by payment protection. If you do it, you are working on trust.
  • Recurring weekly payments: if the contract is paused at any point in the week, Upwork says that week's recurring weekly payment is not issued. The client can still send a bonus for work completed.
  • Your rate and terms: unchanged. A pause does not reset the contract, it just stops billing until restart.

The weekly payment rule is the one that catches people. If your contract pays a set weekly amount and the client pauses for even one day, that week's payment does not go out automatically. If you did real work that week, ask for a bonus to cover it, and see [Upwork bonus payments](/blog/upwork-bonus-payments) for how that works.

When a pause turns into something else

Most pauses are boring: a budget cycle, a holiday, a client waiting on their own team. But a pause with no reply and no restart date for weeks is the client winding down without saying so. My rule: if a paused contract has no answer after a couple of polite follow-ups, I stop planning around it and fill the time. If the client clearly is not coming back, it is cleaner to agree to close the contract than to let it sit, and [how to end an Upwork contract professionally](/blog/how-to-end-an-upwork-contract-professionally) covers how to do that without hurting your feedback.

The real protection against a pause is not depending on one contract. Freelancers with two or three active clients barely notice when one pauses. If a single pause would wreck your month, the fix is pipeline, which starts with [how to get consistent work on Upwork](/blog/how-to-get-consistent-work-on-upwork).

What does it mean when an Upwork contract is paused?

The contract is temporarily inactive. On an hourly contract you cannot log more time until it is restarted. Upwork advises freelancers to stop working on a paused contract immediately.

Why did my Upwork contract get paused?

Either the client paused it to put the work on hold, or Upwork paused it. Upwork pauses contracts in certain situations, most commonly a problem with the client's account or billing method, and says it cannot share the specific reason for privacy.

Do I get paid for work done while an Upwork contract is paused?

Work completed during a pause is not covered by Upwork's payment protection. Hourly time you billed before the contract was paused is still eligible for payment protection.

Will Upwork email me when it pauses my contract?

Upwork's freelancer help article says email notifications are not sent for contracts paused or reactivated by Upwork. You can check a contract's status at any time under All contracts.

How does a client pause an hourly contract on Upwork?

The client goes to Manage work, then Your contracts, finds the contract, opens the (...) options menu and chooses Pause contract. To restart it, they open the same menu and choose Restart.

Can I message my client while the contract is paused?

Yes. You can still message a client on Upwork while a contract is paused, and Upwork recommends contacting them as soon as possible to find out when they expect to resume.

What happens to a recurring weekly payment if the contract is paused?

If the contract is paused at any point during the week, Upwork says the corresponding weekly payment is not issued. The client can send a bonus payment for any work completed.

Why does my Upwork Payroll contract always show as paused?

Upwork says Payroll contracts always show as paused because they use a separate billing system. That status is expected on Payroll contracts.
