Upwork Expert-Vetted: What It Is, How to Get Invited, and Whether It Is Worth Chasing

Upwork Expert-Vetted is the highest of Upwork's talent badges. Upwork describes it as highlighting independent professionals in the top 1% of their field. You do not earn it by hitting a number. You earn it by passing a screening process with Upwork's Talent Managers, which includes a 30-minute interview assessing both hard and soft skills. It is typically invitation-only, it is only offered in select work categories, and the badge displays only to clients on the Business Plus or Enterprise plans.

That last point changes how you should think about it. Rising Talent, Top Rated, and Top Rated Plus are public badges that every client sees. Expert-Vetted is a door into a smaller, higher-budget room. In Upwork Income Club the question usually arrives in one of two forms: "how do I apply for Expert-Vetted" from someone who just earned Top Rated, or "I got the invite, what do they ask" from someone with a call on the calendar. This post answers both, using Upwork's own help center as the source for every rule.

Upwork runs four talent badges for freelancers. Three are earned automatically when your account meets published criteria. One is earned through a human review. Here is the full ladder, using the numbers Upwork publishes.

Two details from Upwork are worth knowing. First, Upwork updates Top Rated and Top Rated Plus eligibility every two weeks, so those badges move with your record. Second, clients only see your top badge, no matter how many you hold. There is no application button you can press today in most cases. Upwork says the badge is typically invitation-only and that it will reach out to you if you qualify. After the invite, you go through a screening process that tests your abilities and professionalism. Upwork also says it may occasionally offer a chance to apply proactively without an invite, so an open application window is possible, but it is not the default path.

Upwork lists three qualities it screens for:

Upwork does not publish a minimum Job Success Score, earnings figure, or badge you must hold before an invite. Anyone telling you a precise threshold is guessing. What Upwork does say is that eligibility depends on category. Only freelancers and agencies in select categories can become Expert-Vetted, and those categories may change over time. If your category is not one of them, no amount of work on your profile will produce an invite, which is why I tell members not to build their plan around this badge.

The interview is a 30-minute video call with Upwork that assesses both hard skills and soft skills. Upwork's own tips are practical: a strong internet connection and a working webcam, a well-lit space with minimal distractions, examples of your work experience such as completed projects, and readiness to talk through intricate challenges you faced, the solutions you built, and the results of your work, such as key metrics.

Soft skills are graded the whole time, not in a separate section. Answer the question that was asked, keep answers short, and ask a clarifying question when something is ambiguous. Upwork is strict here, and the rules are short. You can reschedule only if you give at least 24 hours of notice through the calendar link, and you can only reschedule once. If you miss the call, you will not be considered for the Expert-Vetted program at that time. There is a five-minute grace period from the scheduled start. If you have not joined within five minutes, Upwork treats it as a missed call.

Upwork lists four benefits for Expert-Vetted freelancers:

The visibility limit is the part most people miss. Business Plus is Upwork's paid client plan, and Upwork lists access to Expert-Vetted talent as one of the things it adds over the free Basic plan, alongside shortlisting services and premium support. A client on the Basic plan does not see your Expert-Vetted badge. If you already hold Top Rated or Top Rated Plus, those clients keep seeing that public badge. In practice Expert-Vetted adds a new audience of higher-budget clients rather than replacing what the rest of the marketplace sees.

One benefit is less exclusive than it sounds. Consultations are not reserved for Expert-Vetted talent. Upwork says individual freelancers can offer consultations if they hold any of the four talent badges, including Rising Talent. My answer: worth accepting, not worth chasing. You cannot apply your way in most of the time, you cannot control whether your category is eligible, and the badge only shows to a subset of clients. What you can control is the record that makes an invite likely: a Job Success Score that holds above 90%, repeat and long-term clients, and a portfolio that shows results. Those same things earn Top Rated and Top Rated Plus, which every client sees.
