What Upwork profile skills are and why they matter
Upwork profile skills are the short tags listed in the Skills section of your freelancer profile, things like "WordPress", "Copywriting" or "Data Entry". You do not type them freely. You pick each one from Upwork's own list, which is why they work as matching signals rather than decoration.
Upwork's help center is direct about what they do: skills help match you with the right jobs and improve search visibility, and your selected categories and skills guide how clients discover your profile, with Upwork's search algorithm relying on them to match you with relevant jobs. Everything in this post comes from Upwork's own help center articles on adding skills, building your profile, profile categories, soft skill tags and the Specialized Profiles change, checked on the day this was written. Upwork edits these pages often, so recheck them if you are reading this much later.
How to add skills to your Upwork profile
- Go to your profile (profile picture icon, then Your profile).
- Scroll down to the Skills section and click the pencil icon.
- Start typing the name of a skill, then select the best match from the list Upwork shows you.
- Repeat for each skill you want to add.
- Drag the tags in the editor window into the order you want. The order in the editor is the order clients see on your profile.
- Click Save.
How many skills can you add on Upwork?
This is where Upwork contradicts itself, and it is why you will see different answers online. On the day this was written, Upwork's dedicated article on adding skills said you can add up to 20 skills. Its profile essentials article and its categories article both said up to 15. The skills editor on your own profile enforces the real limit, so trust what it lets you save over any number you read, including this one.
Profile limits as stated in Upwork's help center (checked 2026-10-16)
| Profile field | What Upwork's help pages say |
|---|---|
| Skills | Up to 20 in the dedicated skills article, up to 15 in the profile essentials and categories articles |
| Categories | Up to 10 in the categories article. The profile essentials article says up to four when you first create your account |
| Skill order | Set by dragging tags in the editor. That order is how they appear on your profile |
| Soft skill tags | Generated by AI from client reviews. You cannot add, edit or remove them |
My view: the limit matters less than people think. Filling every slot with loosely related skills does not make you look more capable, it makes your profile harder to read. Fill as many as you can with skills you would genuinely take a contract for, and stop there.
How to choose which skills to list
Upwork suggests weighing three things: your greatest strengths, what you enjoy doing most, and what you see clients request in their job descriptions. The third one is the one most freelancers skip, and it is the one that does the matching. Here is how I would build the list:
- Open 10 to 20 job posts you would actually want to win, in your niche and budget range.
- Write down the skills listed on each post and the words clients use in the description.
- Keep the skills that come up again and again and that you can deliver well today.
- Put your core paid service first, then the tools and supporting skills that go with it.
- Cut anything you added "just in case". If you would turn down the job, the skill should not be on your profile.
Your skills should agree with your title and your overview. If your title says you build Shopify stores and your first five skills are about logo design, a client scanning your profile gets a mixed message. Pick the niche first, which [how to pick a freelance niche on Upwork](/blog/how-to-pick-a-freelance-niche-on-upwork) walks through, then make the title in [Upwork profile title that ranks](/blog/upwork-profile-title-that-ranks) and the opening lines in [the Upwork profile overview guide](/blog/upwork-profile-overview-section-guide) say the same thing as your skills.
Skills after Specialized Profiles were removed
Upwork removed Specialized Profiles as of May 28, 2026. Your one main profile now adapts to each client: when a client views your work history and skills, the most relevant experience is highlighted and shown first based on their search, and when you send a proposal, the work history, reviews, portfolio items and skills that best match the job post are highlighted first.
Two practical consequences. First, the skills from old Specialized Profiles did not transfer automatically, so if you used to sell two services on two profiles, check that both sets of skills now live on your main profile. Second, because Upwork now picks what to highlight for each client, one profile can cover two related services without you curating separate versions. It cannot fix a profile that tries to cover ten unrelated ones. Full details are in [Upwork Specialized Profiles removed](/blog/upwork-specialized-profiles-removed).
Skills are one input, not the whole profile
A clean skills list helps the right clients find you, but it does not win the job on its own. Clients still decide on your title, overview, portfolio, reviews and proposal. If your profile is getting views but no invites, look at the rest of it with [how to get more profile views on Upwork](/blog/how-to-get-more-profile-views-on-upwork) and [how to get Upwork job invites without proposals](/blog/how-to-get-upwork-job-invites-without-proposals). If you have no client work to show yet, [build a portfolio with no client work](/blog/how-to-build-a-freelance-portfolio-with-no-client-work) so the skills you list have proof behind them.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add skills to my Upwork profile?
Go to your profile, scroll to the Skills section and click the pencil icon. Type a skill, select the best match from Upwork's list, repeat for each skill, drag the tags into the order you want, then click Save.
How many skills can I add on Upwork?
Upwork's help pages disagree. The dedicated skills article says up to 20, while the profile essentials and categories articles say up to 15. The skills editor on your profile enforces the actual limit.
Why can't I find my skill in Upwork's list?
Upwork recommends checking the English spelling, trying a synonym, or choosing a less specific skill. It also deliberately excludes services that cannot be sold on the marketplace.
Does the order of my Upwork skills matter?
You choose the order by dragging the tags in the skills editor, and that is the order they appear on your profile. Put your core paid service first so it is the first thing a client sees.
Are skills and categories the same thing on Upwork?
No. Upwork says categories are separate from the skills section. Categories group related skills and specializations and are edited from Profile settings, while skills are individual tags edited from the Skills section of your profile.
Did my Specialized Profile skills move to my main profile?
No. Upwork says the title, overview and skills from Specialized Profiles did not transfer automatically. Portfolio items, earnings and work history did. Copy any skills you still need into your main profile.
Can I edit the soft skill tags on my Upwork profile?
No. Soft skill tags are generated by AI from your clients' public reviews, and Upwork says you cannot edit, remove or opt out of them. They are part of a test and are separate from your Job Success Score.
