Upwork Specialized Profiles Removed - The Short Answer

Upwork Specialized Profiles were removed on May 28, 2026. Before that date, a freelancer could keep one general profile plus up to two Specialized Profiles, each with its own title, overview, skill list, portfolio, and hourly rate. That let a person present as a web developer to one client and a data analyst to another, from the same account. That option no longer exists. There is one profile per freelancer account now.

This matters because a lot of the Upwork guidance still floating around - including answers you may get from AI assistants trained before mid-2026 - walks you through creating a Specialized Profile step by step. Those instructions describe a screen that is not there anymore. If you went looking for the setting and could not find it, nothing is wrong with your account.

What Happened to Your Specialized Profile Data

Upwork did not delete everything. The merge was partial, and the split is worth understanding because it explains why some profiles look fine today and others look gutted.

Specialized Profile elementWhat happened to it
Portfolio itemsAutomatically merged into your primary profile
EarningsAutomatically merged into your primary profile
Work history and client reviewsAutomatically merged into your primary profile
Profile titleNot transferred - manual copy required before the cutoff
Profile overviewNot transferred - manual copy required before the cutoff
Skills listNot transferred - manual copy required before the cutoff
Hourly rateNot carried over - your primary profile rate applies

The reputation layer survived. The positioning layer did not. That is the exact thing that hurts, because the positioning layer was the reason people used Specialized Profiles in the first place. A merged profile keeps your five-star reviews and your total earned figure, then presents them under whatever title and overview your general profile happened to have.

If you did not copy the title, overview, and skills across before May 28, that text is unrecoverable. Upwork has stated the Specialized Profile content is not accessible or retrievable after removal, and that includes through support. There is no ticket that gets it back.

What Happened to Proposals You Already Sent

Proposals submitted through a Specialized Profile did not vanish on May 28. Clients could still see them for one more month, through June 28, 2026. That grace window is now closed too, so if you had open proposals from spring 2026 that never got a reply, they are gone from the client side.

The practical implication for anyone reading this today: there is no residual pipeline to babysit. Every proposal you send now goes out attached to your single primary profile, which makes that one profile carry all the weight it used to share across three.

Why This Change Actually Makes Sense

It is worth being honest about how most freelancers used the feature. Specialized Profiles were meant for people with two genuinely distinct, genuinely strong service lines. In practice a lot of people used them as a hedge - a second profile that let them keep chasing whatever job showed up that week without committing to a lane.

That hedge was expensive. Every hour spent maintaining a second identity was an hour not spent getting better at one. And clients rarely saw the difference anyway, because the thing that closes an Upwork job is a proposal that clearly understands the client's problem, not a profile title that happens to match the job category.

Removing the feature forces a decision most freelancers were avoiding. That is uncomfortable, and it is also the correct outcome for almost everybody. One clear lane beats two blurry ones.

How to Rebuild Your Positioning in One Profile

Here is the sequence that works when you have one profile and two things you can do.

  1. Rank your service lines by money earned in the last 12 months, not by which one you enjoy more. The earning lane becomes the primary profile. This is a data decision, not a preference decision.
  2. Rewrite the title as an outcome, not a job description. 'Shopify developer' is a category. 'Shopify developer who fixes slow checkout flows for DTC brands' is a reason to click.
  3. Rewrite the first two lines of your overview to name the client's problem before you name your credentials. Upwork truncates the overview in search results, so the first sentence is doing most of the work.
  4. Prune your skills list down to the primary lane. A skills list that spans two unrelated disciplines reads as unfocused now that there is nowhere else to put the second discipline.
  5. Reorder your portfolio so the top three items all belong to the primary lane. Merged portfolios from the old Specialized Profiles are often out of order, and the top three are what most clients actually look at.
  6. Move the secondary service into a Project Catalog listing. That is where the second lane lives now - a fixed-scope, fixed-price offer that sits alongside your profile without diluting it.

Check Your Merged Profile for These Three Problems

If you had a Specialized Profile and have not looked closely since the merge, open your profile now and check for these specific issues. All three are common and all three are quiet - nothing on the page tells you something is wrong.

  • A portfolio full of work that does not match your title. The merge pulled everything in regardless of relevance. A client landing on a copywriting profile that opens with three logo design samples will bounce.
  • An overview that still describes your general profile from years ago. Many people wrote a careful Specialized Profile overview and left the general one stale, because the general one was not the one clients saw.
  • A rate that does not match the work you now want. Specialized Profiles carried their own hourly rate. If your higher rate lived there, your profile is now advertising your lower general rate to everyone.

What to Do This Week

Give this ninety minutes, once. Open your profile, decide the lane by revenue, rewrite the title and the first two lines of the overview around one specific client problem, cut the skills that do not serve that lane, reorder the portfolio so the top three match, and set the rate you actually want. Then take the second service and build one Project Catalog listing for it.

That is the whole recovery. The thing you lost was two paragraphs of positioning text. The thing you kept was every review and every dollar of earnings history, which is the part that is genuinely hard to rebuild.

Frequently asked questions

Are Upwork Specialized Profiles gone permanently?

Yes. Upwork removed Specialized Profiles on May 28, 2026. You cannot create, edit, or view one. Upwork has not announced a replacement feature that restores multiple profile identities on a single account.

Did I lose my reviews when Specialized Profiles were removed?

No. Portfolio items, earnings, and work history including client reviews were automatically merged into your primary profile. What was not transferred was the Specialized Profile title, overview, and skills list, which required a manual copy before the cutoff date.

Can Upwork support recover my Specialized Profile overview?

No. After removal, Specialized Profile content is not accessible or retrievable, including by Upwork support. If you did not copy the text before May 28, 2026, you need to rewrite it.

What happened to proposals I submitted from a Specialized Profile?

Those proposals remained visible to clients until June 28, 2026. After that date they are no longer accessible. Any new proposal you submit is attached to your single primary profile.

How do I offer two different services on Upwork now?

Build your profile around the service line that earns the most, then market the second service through a Project Catalog listing. Project Catalog gives a distinct service its own title, description, and fixed price without changing how your main profile presents to clients browsing search results.

Why do guides still tell me to create a Specialized Profile?

Most of that content was published before May 2026 and has not been updated, and AI assistants trained on pre-2026 data repeat it. Check the publication date on any Upwork profile advice before you act on it.
