What an Upwork video introduction is: the short answer

An Upwork video introduction is a short video of you, hosted on YouTube, that sits on your freelancer profile so clients can see and hear you before they invite or hire you. You add it by pasting a YouTube link into the 'Video introduction' option in your profile sidebar. It is optional, but Upwork counts it toward profile completeness, and completeness gates the badges that make clients trust a profile.

Everything below on how it works comes from Upwork's own help center articles on enhancing your profile, 100% complete profiles, portfolio media and Boosted Profiles, checked on the day this post was written. Upwork changes these features often, so check those pages if you are reading this much later.

How to add a video introduction to your Upwork profile

Upwork's steps are short. The work is in the video, not the upload.

  1. Upload your video to YouTube first. Upwork does not host the profile video itself, it links to YouTube.
  2. Turn off monetization on the video in YouTube so no ads play on it.
  3. Make sure the video is not set to private, or clients will not be able to watch it. Upwork's portfolio guidance asks for public YouTube videos so clients can view them.
  4. On Upwork, go to your profile and scroll to the 'Video introduction' option in the sidebar.
  5. Select the + sign, paste your YouTube link into the box, and select Save.

Why the video matters: the 10% completeness rule

Upwork's help center spells out how profile completeness is scored. Four items are required and make up the first 50%: a profile photo, a profile overview, at least one employment history item, and at least one skill tag. The other 50% can come from any mix of optional items.

Optional profile items and what each is worth, per Upwork's help center

Optional itemValue toward 100%
Profile video10%
Portfolio item5% each (max 20%)
Additional employment history10% each (max 20%)
Additional skill tags10%
Education10% each (max 20%)
At least one other linked account10% (max 10%)
Certification5% each (max 10%)
At least one other experience item5% (max 5%)

Why that matters: Upwork says you need a 100% complete profile to be eligible for Rising Talent, Top Rated and more. If you are stuck at 90%, a profile video is one of the fastest ways to close the gap, because it is one item worth a full 10%. You can check your current percentage on the right-hand panel of the Find Work page, under your name and title.

The badge paths themselves are in [how to get the Upwork Rising Talent badge](/blog/upwork-rising-talent-badge-how-to-get-it) and [Upwork Top Rated badge requirements](/blog/upwork-top-rated-badge-requirements).

Profile video vs Boosted Profile video

Upwork now has two different videos, and people mix them up. The profile video introduction is the YouTube link on your profile. The Boosted Profile video is an uploaded clip that plays inside a paid Boosted Profile placement in client search results.

Upwork lists the Boosted Profile video eligibility criteria as: a Top Rated, Top Rated Plus or Expert-Vetted badge; buying or spending at least 30 Connects in the past 90 days; $1K+ in lifetime earnings; an active Freelancer Plus membership; or a verified identity. If you add a video, your boost does not start until the video is approved, which Upwork says typically happens within 30 minutes. A video that breaks the rules is rejected and you can upload a new one.

Whether a Boosted Profile is worth paying for at all is a separate decision. The visibility side of that is covered in [how to get more profile views on Upwork](/blog/how-to-get-more-profile-views-on-upwork).

What to say: the 60-Second Hire Script

Upwork does not set a length for the profile video. My recommendation is to keep it to 60 seconds anyway, for two reasons. A client deciding whether to invite you is skimming, not settling in. And 60 seconds is the hard cap for the Boosted Profile video, so if you record to that length once, the same video can go on YouTube for your profile and be uploaded to a boost later without re-recording.

Inside Upwork Income Club we use a structure we call the 60-Second Hire Script. It is my opinion on what a client needs to hear, not an Upwork rule.

  1. Who you help and with what (about 10 seconds). One sentence that matches your profile title. 'I help B2B software companies turn product updates into email sequences that get opened.' Not your life story.
  2. The problem you remove (about 15 seconds). Describe the situation your client is in before they hire someone like you, in their words. This is the part that makes a client think 'that is me'.
  3. Proof (about 20 seconds). What you have actually done: the type of projects, the tools you work in, the deliverable they get. If you have Upwork reviews, refer to them. If you have none yet, show the work instead of claiming results.
  4. How you work (about 10 seconds). Your process in one breath: how you start, how you communicate, how fast you reply.
  5. The ask (about 5 seconds). Tell them what to do next on Upwork: 'Invite me to your job or send me a message here on Upwork.' Never point them off-platform.

Recording it without a studio

You do not need special equipment. A phone or laptop camera is enough if the basics are right. Upwork's own tips for recorded video interviews are a useful baseline here: check your lighting and background, and dress like you would for a client video call.

  • Face a window or a lamp so the light is on your face, not behind you.
  • Put the camera at eye level and look into the lens, not at your own image on screen.
  • Use a quiet room. Bad audio loses a viewer faster than average video.
  • Skip background music. It is banned outright in Boosted Profile videos, and it makes the same file unusable there.
  • Speak from bullet points, not a word-for-word read. A slightly imperfect take that sounds like you beats a perfect one that sounds read.
  • Do not use an AI avatar or a voice clone. Upwork requires the Boosted Profile video to be really you, and a client hiring a person wants to see that person.

Common mistakes that waste the video

  • Opening with your name and background instead of what you do for the client. Your name is already on the profile.
  • Saying contact details or showing a website or social handle. Contact info is not allowed on your profile, and that includes media.
  • Leaving YouTube monetization on, which Upwork's guidelines tell you to disable.
  • Setting the YouTube video to private, so clients cannot play it.
  • A video that pitches a different service from your profile title. The video should reinforce your title and overview, not introduce a second offer. See [how to write an Upwork profile title that ranks](/blog/upwork-profile-title-that-ranks).
  • Recording once and never updating. When your niche or offer changes, re-record, the same way you would edit your overview.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a video introduction on Upwork?

Upload the video to YouTube with monetization turned off, then go to your Upwork profile, scroll to the 'Video introduction' option in the sidebar, select the + sign, paste the YouTube link and select Save.

Does an Upwork video introduction help your profile?

Per Upwork's help center, a profile video counts for 10% toward a 100% complete profile, and a 100% complete profile is required to be eligible for Rising Talent and Top Rated. Beyond that, Upwork does not publish data on how much a video affects hiring, so treat it as a trust signal, not a guaranteed boost.

How long should an Upwork video introduction be?

Upwork does not set a length for the profile video. My recommendation is about 60 seconds, because clients skim and because 60 seconds is the maximum for the Boosted Profile video, so one recording can be used in both places.

Can I upload a video file directly to my Upwork profile?

Not for the profile video introduction. Upwork's instructions are to upload it to YouTube and paste the link. Uploaded mp4 or mov files are used for the Boosted Profile video and for portfolio items, which have their own size limits.

Can I use an AI avatar for my Upwork intro video?

For the Boosted Profile video, no: Upwork requires it to be really you, not AI-generated content. For the profile video I would not either. The point of the video is to let a client see the person they would be working with.

Who can add a video to a Boosted Profile?

Upwork says the feature is being tested and is not available to everyone yet. You need at least one of: a Top Rated, Top Rated Plus or Expert-Vetted badge; at least 30 Connects bought or spent in the past 90 days; $1K+ in lifetime earnings; an active Freelancer Plus membership; or a verified identity.

Upwork Boosted Messages: How They Work, What They Cost, and Whether to Use Them

Upwork Boosted Messages let you pay Connects to drop a short message into the inbox of a client who is actively hiring for your kind of work. You only pay when a message is delivered, but you cannot pick the client or edit the message once it is live. Here is how a campaign works, what it costs, the delivery limits, and how I would write one.
