Why Is My Upwork Profile Private? What Triggers It and How to Switch It Back

Why is my Upwork profile private? The two inactivity triggers

Your Upwork profile is private for one of two reasons: you set it that way, or Upwork set it for you because the account looked inactive. If you did not touch the setting, it is the second one. Upwork's help center says it changes a freelancer profile from public to private in two situations, and both are about earnings, not about anything you did wrong.

When Upwork switches a freelancer profile to private, per its help center

Who you areWhat triggers the switch
Established freelancerYou do not earn money on Upwork for two years or more.
New freelancerYou do not earn money within 90 days of your first proposal, or you do not submit a proposal within your first 90 days.

Upwork's stated reason is search relevance. It wants clients who search for freelancers to see people who are currently working, and it says the change also reduces notifications for freelancers who have stepped away. Upwork says it notifies you by email when it makes the change, so search your inbox if you are not sure when it happened.

What a private Upwork profile still lets you do

A private profile hides you from search and nothing else. Upwork states that your profile will not appear in results when clients search for freelancers, but clients will still see it if you submit a proposal or share your profile link with them. Your account is open, your history is intact, and you can keep applying to jobs.

  • Still works: sending proposals. The client who receives one can open your profile as normal.
  • Still works: sharing your direct profile link. Upwork notes the viewer needs to be logged in to Upwork to see a private profile.
  • Stops working: appearing when a client searches for freelancers on Upwork.
  • Stops working: appearing in search engines such as Google or Bing.
  • Stops working: Boosted Profiles. Upwork says your profile visibility must be public to use that feature.

This is why a private profile often goes unnoticed for weeks. Proposals keep going out and nothing looks broken. The only symptom is that inbound interest goes quiet, because search is where unsolicited invites come from. If invites matter to your pipeline, that is covered in [how to get Upwork job invites without sending proposals](/blog/how-to-get-upwork-job-invites-without-proposals).

How to make your Upwork profile public again

Log out of Upwork and log back in. That is the fix Upwork itself gives: when you log back in, your profile is automatically reset to the visibility option you had before the change. If you would rather set it by hand, or the reset does not take, change it in your settings.

  1. Go to Your profile, then Profile settings.
  2. Find the Visibility section.
  3. Open the dropdown and choose Public.
  4. Wait. Upwork says visibility updates can take up to 24 hours on its own platform.

Notice what the log-in reset actually does. It restores the option you had, not necessarily Public. If you had chosen Only Upwork users at some point, that is what comes back, so open the Visibility setting once and read it rather than assuming.

The three Upwork profile visibility options and which to pick

Upwork gives you three visibility levels, and for a freelancer who wants work the right one is almost always Public. The other two exist for people who want fewer messages, not more clients.

Upwork profile visibility options, per its help center

SettingWho can find you
PublicAnyone, including people outside Upwork. Your profile may appear in search engines.
Only Upwork usersLogged-in Upwork members only. It does not show up in search engines.
PrivateHidden from search on and off Upwork. Only logged-in people with your direct link can view it.

My view: choosing Private on purpose only makes sense when you are genuinely away. Upwork's own guidance for an extended absence suggests setting your profile to private, or adding a short note at the top of it, and updating your hours per week. That is a sensible use. Leaving it private while you are actively hunting for work is the opposite of what you want.

How to stop Upwork setting your profile to private again

The rule is tied to earnings, so the durable fix is a contract that pays. Logging in resets the switch, but it does not change the fact that the account has no recent earnings. There are two ways to stay public, and only one of them builds anything.

  • Earn on the platform. For a new freelancer that means landing a first paid contract inside the 90-day window. The fastest route I know is in [how to land your first Upwork client with zero reviews](/blog/how-to-land-first-upwork-client-zero-reviews).
  • Subscribe to Freelancer Plus. Upwork says a Freelancer Plus membership ensures your profile visibility is never set to private. Whether the membership is worth paying for on its other merits is a separate question, covered in [is Upwork Freelancer Plus worth it](/blog/is-upwork-freelancer-plus-worth-it).

Agency freelancers follow the same rules. Upwork bases it on the earnings from your contracts on behalf of the agency, plus any individual contracts if you are non-exclusive. It also notes that exclusive agency freelancers cannot get a Plus membership, so for them the log-in reset or the manual setting is the only route.

The Visibility Check: run it before you blame your proposals

At Upwork Income Club we call this the Visibility Check, and it is the first thing to rule out when invites dry up. It takes a few minutes and it separates a settings problem from a profile-quality problem. Most advice skips it and sends you straight to rewriting your overview.

  1. Read the setting. Your profile, Profile settings, Visibility. If it does not say Public, you have found the cause.
  2. Search your email for a message from Upwork about profile visibility. That tells you whether Upwork made the change and roughly when.
  3. Look at your earnings history against the two triggers. No earnings in two years, or none in your first 90 days, means it will happen again unless something changes.
  4. Only after all three are clear, move on to the profile itself: title, overview, portfolio, rate.

If the setting is Public and you are still invisible, the problem is ranking, not privacy. That is a different fix, and it starts with [how to get more profile views on Upwork](/blog/how-to-get-more-profile-views-on-upwork) and, for the broader diagnosis, [why am I not getting jobs on Upwork](/blog/why-am-i-not-getting-jobs-on-upwork).

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Upwork profile private when I did not change it?

Upwork changes inactive freelancer profiles from public to private. Its help center lists two triggers: an established freelancer who does not earn on Upwork for two years or more, and a new freelancer who does not earn within 90 days of their first proposal or does not submit a proposal in their first 90 days. Upwork says it emails you when it makes the change.

Can clients still see my Upwork profile if it is private?

Yes, in two cases. Upwork says clients will still see your profile if you submit a proposal to their job or share your profile link with them. What they cannot do is find you by searching for freelancers, and your profile will not appear in search engines.

How do I make my Upwork profile public again?

Log out of Upwork and log back in. Upwork says this automatically resets your profile to the visibility option you had before. You can also set it manually under Your profile > Profile settings > Visibility. Upwork notes that visibility updates can take up to 24 hours.

Can I still send proposals with a private Upwork profile?

Yes. Upwork states that you can still submit proposals when your profile is private. You simply will not appear in search results, so you lose inbound invites while keeping the ability to apply.

Is a private Upwork profile the same as a suspended account?

No. A private profile is a visibility setting that hides you from search. Your account stays open and you can keep applying to jobs. A suspension is an enforcement action with its own process, which is a separate situation entirely.

Does Freelancer Plus stop my profile going private?

Upwork says a Freelancer Plus membership ensures your profile visibility is never set to private. Exclusive agency freelancers cannot get a Plus membership, so they rely on the log-in reset or the manual visibility setting instead.

Upwork Two-Step Verification: How to Set It Up and Avoid Lockouts

Upwork two-step verification lives under Account settings > Password and Security. Turn on any of four methods: a mobile app prompt, a text message code, an authenticator app code, or a security question. Upwork recommends setting up more than one so you have a backup. Here is how each method works, which ones to pair, what changes when you get a new phone, and what to do if you are locked out of your account.
