Connects

Connects are the unit of account Upwork uses to gate proposal submissions. Every time you apply to a job post you spend a set number of Connects - typically 6 to 16, scaled to the expected contract value Upwork estimates for that listing. The spend is non-refundable once you submit, though Upwork does refund your Connects if the job post is removed or closed without hiring. Each account receives a modest free allocation each month, and you can buy additional Connects in the Connects Store when you need more.

The mechanics matter less than the strategy. Connects create a small but real cost per application, which is Upwork's way of filtering out mass-spray proposals that would otherwise flood every job post. That filtering only works if freelancers respect the signal - and most do not. The common mistake is treating Connects as cheap enough to spend freely, applying to every marginally relevant post in the hope that volume produces results. The freelancers who land clients consistently do the opposite: they read each job post carefully, only spend Connects on jobs where their profile is a genuine fit, and put real effort into a smaller number of proposals.

A practical Connect budget depends on where you are in your Upwork journey. New freelancers without a Job Success Score or reviews need to apply to more jobs to get the same response rate as an established profile, so a generous initial budget makes sense. As your profile builds social proof, the same budget goes further because your proposals convert better.
