Job Success Score

The Job Success Score is a composite metric Upwork computes from your contract history and updates roughly every two weeks. The exact formula is not public, but Upwork has confirmed that it draws on client feedback (both public and private), the proportion of contracts that ended well versus poorly, long-term client relationships that produce repeat work, and the overall pattern of your activity. Scores are expressed as a percentage and only become visible once you have enough data for Upwork to calculate a statistically meaningful number - usually after a handful of contracts.

The JSS matters for two reasons. First, it directly affects where you appear in Upwork's search results. Upwork's algorithm favors freelancers with higher scores, which means a strong JSS generates more inbound visibility without you doing anything extra. A JSS below 80 can suppress you from search, and below 70 it becomes very difficult to get traction. Second, it is a trust signal clients actively look at: most experienced buyers on Upwork will not contact or hire a freelancer whose JSS is below their threshold, and that threshold is usually 90 or above for sophisticated clients.

Raising a damaged JSS is possible but slow. The fastest levers are: completing contracts successfully and getting clients to close them formally rather than leaving them open, building long-term client relationships that produce positive recurring signals, and proactively heading off a bad outcome with communication when a contract is not going well. Avoid what freelancers call JSS traps: accepting scope creep silently and then having a client unhappy with the result, starting contracts you cannot complete, or letting contracts go stale and be abandoned.
