Rising Talent

Rising Talent is Upwork's early-career recognition badge. It is designed to address a real catch-22 for new freelancers: clients look for social proof before hiring, but you cannot build social proof without clients. Rising Talent is Upwork's signal to the market that certain newer accounts are already performing at a high level even without a long track record - they have a complete profile, they respond to messages promptly, and their earliest work is producing positive feedback.

The criteria Upwork uses for Rising Talent are not published as a precise checklist, but they include profile completeness (photo, portfolio, summary, skills, and rates all filled in), response rate and response time, the quality of early feedback, and general engagement on the platform. Upwork re-evaluates Rising Talent status regularly, so it can be gained or lost based on your activity. Getting it does not require a high JSS - it is specifically for freelancers who do not yet have enough history for a JSS - but it does require that your early signals are positive.

From a practical standpoint, Rising Talent gives you two things: a badge that clients can see on your profile that communicates 'this person is a safe bet despite being new,' and slightly better placement in some Upwork search results. It will not substitute for a strong JSS in the long run, but it narrows the trust gap while you are building the track record that produces one. The fastest path to Rising Talent is a complete, specific profile and prompt, professional responses to every message, combined with accepting only contracts you are confident you can complete well. A few strong early contracts are worth far more than many mediocre ones.
